Illinois Tollway Relocation
Beginning in 2014 the Illinois Tollway launched a $2.5 billion dollar expansion project to widen I-90 from Rockford to O’Hare Airport. A critical component of this project was the relocation of over 6 miles of large diameter water main operated by NSMJAWA. NSMJAWA provides potable water to over 300,000 customers in the Chicagoland northwest suburbs. Their existing pipeline, ranging in size from 16” diameter to 90” diameter, was in conflict with the proposed expressway. The Illinois Tollway engaged Benchmark Construction in two separate contracts worth over $73 million dollars to relocate the pipeline. Benchmark crews worked concurrently in multiple locations, sometimes 7 days a week, in order to meet the aggressive schedule. Water main shutdowns and connections were coordinated with customer communities to minimize impact. Benchmark’s team of engineers provided value engineering solutions on the project that saved taxpayers $1.5 million dollars. As a reward for the successful, on time, and under budget completion of the project the Illinois Tollway named Benchmark as its 2016 “Specialty Contractor of the Year”.
